FIVE WINTER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS CROWNED:
MEN'S DIV. 1 - TEAM RICHMOND SHOOK OFF RICHMOND ELITE LATE TO WIN BACK-AND-FORTH THRILLER, 76-71
A game that truly could have gone either way - a game that saw neither team lead by more than five until late in the game - was won on the defensive end by Team Richmond, & they closed the deal with a 76-71 victory over Richmond Elite. Jack Browne led Team Richmond with 24 points, while Adam Lonon scored 15, Matt Coward had 14, & Brett James finished with 13. They needed all of that to overcome the game-high 26-point effort from Kevin Mayo for Richmond Elite, who also got 15 from Steve Wilkerson, 11 from Clarence Thornton & 10 from Vidrell Lee.
MEN'S DIV. 2 - NEW YORK LIFE MADE THE PLAYS LATE TO WIN THE BATTLE OF UNBEATENS, 62-60 OVER WE R ONE
Two very evenly-matched teams threw punches back-and-forth, but New York Life grabbed the late lead and iced it from the foul line as they won the battle of unbeatens, 62-60 over We R One. Mike Edwards & Jonathan Baker each poured in 17 points to lead the way, while Fletch Bulifant scored the bulk of his 13 points in the 2nd half, & Jeremiah O'Brien added 11. Anthony Stamper led all scorers with 21 points for We R One, who also got 13 points each from Paul Finn & Brandon Braxton, but they ran out of gas in the closing minutes with chances to tie the game.
MEN'S DIV. 3 - 804 BALLERS OVERCAME 11-POINT DEFICIT & SURVIVED TEAM DYNAMIC, 47-45
Team Dynamic opened up a surprising 11-point lead early in the 2nd half, but the 804 Ballers, led by big contributions from Jamar Gorrell & George Marshall, charged back to steal a 47-45 championship win. Gorrell scored 18 points & Marshall finished with 17, but the 804 Ballers had to watch as innocent bystanders as Team Dynamic's Charles Reid got fouled on a game-tying 3-point attempt as time expired. Reid made the 1st, but missed the 2nd, sealing the 804 victory. Team Dynamic's lead disappeared in the 2nd half as 804 clamped down on Xavier Carlyle, who was dominant with a game-high 20 points for Team Dynamic.
COED - THE REJECTS WERE TOO MUCH FOR STR8 BALL'N, PREVAILED 79-67
The Rejects were the best team from start to finish all season, and they capped off winning their 2nd straight title with a sound 79-67 defeat of Str8 Ball'n. Lindsay Biggs led another balanced scoring attack with 18 points, Jerrell Frederick had 16, Carlan Burke scored 14 & Cory Jackson netted 11. Str8 Ball'n got 22 points from Jonathan Baker & a big 20 points from Cat Nicholson (on five 4's), as well as 12 from Josh Hanson in defeat.
WOMEN'S - FALCONS OVERCAME SLOW START & LIMITED THE MVPS TO JUST 12 2ND HALF POINTS, WON BACK-TO-BACK TITLES WITH 38-30 VICTORY
The Falcons overcame a 10-0 deficit to begin the game, and then won the battle of free throws in the closing minutes to go back-to-back with another championship over the MVPs, 38-30. The Falcons got contributions from everyone, led by nine points each from Barvenia Cherry & Monique Bonner. Jasmine Young scored a game-high 11 points for the MVPs, & Jazzmin Dabney added 10, but the team's 9-of-16 from the line cost them big time in such a closely contested game.
