Summer '11 Playoffs Top seeds go 5-for-5 in claiming Summer League Championships
Men's Div. 1 - #1 Bombers knock off #2 New Breed in dominating fashion, 71-59
The Bombers were the best team from start to finish this summer, and they capped off the undefeated season in fine fashion, 71-59 over New Breed. Tramayne Baldwin led all scorers with 22 points, and he led the early surge that built a comfortable margin for the Bombers. Greg Jones scored 15 points, while Trevor Bryant and Jason Wansley scored 10 apiece. . New Breed was a step behind the Bombers all game, whether it was getting to loose balls or on the glass, and they could never manage to get closer than eight in the second half. Marcus Thomas led New Breed with 13 points, and Brian Henderson chipped in 12.
Men's Div. 2 - #W1 Jesus Shuttlesworth controls 2nd half vs. #W2 Business as Usual, rolls 59-48
Business as Usual came out with the energy they needed to win the game, but the best team ultimately won, and that was Jesus Shuttlesworth, as they capped off a perfect 12-0 season with a 59-48 victory. Tommy Folliad was the difference-maker, scoring a game-high 26 points and dominating the glass. Mike Edwards added 11 in the win. . Every time Business as Usual went on a run and got within five or six, Shuttlesworth seemed to create a turnover and a score or hit a couple jumpers and return it to a double-digit game. Business as Usual was led by Curt Bunn's 16 points, and David Smith finished with 12.
Men's Div. 3 - #W1 804 Ballers pull away from #W4 Pippen Ain't Easy, 59-46
The 804 Ballers joined their brethren in Division 1 (Bombers) and Division 2 (Jesus Shuttlesworth) by capping off undefeated seasons with championship victories. 804 did it against defending-champ Pippen Ain't Easy, 59-46. Mario Turner led all scorers with 17 points, George Marshall & Eric Haith each scored 13, & Malcolm King chipped in 11. . For Pippen, Mike Williams scored 14 points & David Conley finished with 11. Their effort for a repeat was thwarted by a great shooting night from the 804 Ballers, who nailed ten 3's as a team.
CoEd - #1 The Rejects hold off late run from #3 Titans for win, 78-69
The Rejects opened up a 20-point lead in the 2nd half & held off a furious rally from the Titans to claim the championship, 78-69. The Rejects had four players in double figures, led by Stephen Biggs' 18 points. Carlan Burke scored 16, Kathy Wilson added 14, & Lindsay Biggs finished with 11.
Ryan Martin finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Titans, who trimmed the 20-point deficit all the way down to four with a couple minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get. Michele Cosel finished with 16 in the loss.
Women's - #1 MVPs claim late lead & hold on against #2 Falcons, 52-45
This back-and-forth championship game finally saw the MVPs seize control in the last five minutes, and they held on for the 52-45 win. Courtney Dyer filled it up again, nailing six 3's and finishing with a game-high 20 points. Keysha Bailey & Cassandra Dabbs each scored 10 in the victory. . The Falcons were in this game the whole way, as the lead changed hands over and over during the first 35 minutes. Their fate was sealed in the closing minutes, however, as Dyer & Dabbs both hit multiple big shots to provide the winning margin. Marcia Bogan paced the Falcons with 18 points.
