MEN'S A CHAMPIONSHIP - New Breed outlasts Village Cafe
in OT thriller, 50-47
In a contrast of styles, New Breed stuck to the game plan and it was just enough to survive and outlast Village Café, 50-47, in overtime. New Breed controlled most of the game, but it was two runs by Village Café that gave them a chance. They closed the first half with a 9-0 run to cut the New Breed halftime-lead to just two. Then, trailing by 10 with six minutes to go, they put together an 8-0 run to again get within two. Village Café's Peter Thomas buried a game-tying three-pointer with 33 seconds remaining. After an empty last possession from New Breed, the game went to overtime. Despite a bunch of missed free throws, New Breed survived by getting a quick lead and clamping down defensively, forcing multiple VC turnovers in the closing minute. New Breed got 15 points from Brian Henderson and 14 from Shawn Harris. Much to the credit of New Breed, it was an uncharacteristically bad shooting night for VC. Jamal Brunt seemed to be the only one hitting, and he paced VC with 15 points, while Marcus Jenkins added 12.
MEN'S B CHAMPIONSHIP - Team Envy cruises to title
over Ballers, Inc, 59-45
Ballers, Inc dealt Team Envy a ten-point loss in week one of the season, but Team Envy continued to improve each week together, and they used their size and depth to handle the Ballers with relative ease, claiming the Men's B League Championship with a 59-45 victory. Naim Fogle had no match inside, scoring 20 points and dominating the boards. Julian Ryland added 11 for Team Envy. Fred Rousey (20 points) and Deron Seward (13) did the bulk of the scoring for the Ballers, but their five-man squad ran out of gas. Just a three-point game at the half, Team Envy clamped down defensively and forced the Ballers into quick, bad shots as the lead grew. Nine of the 15 Ballers' field goals were from 3-point distance.
COED CHAMPIONSHIP - Titans defend title in a big way
over the Knights, 69-57
*Note: CoEd box scores reflect female scoring as 2-pt & 3-pt field goals, not 3's and 4's (will show alternate final score and female scoring averages)
In a rematch of VAIL's CoEd championship last season, the Titans blew away the Knights early, building a 23-point halftime lead, and cruising to their second straight title, 69-57. Earl Dyer led the offensive attack for the Titans with a game-high 20 points. The Titans also got 17 from Lindsey Martin and 15 from Reid Martin. The Knights tried to fight back, but the 12-point final deficit was the closest they ever got. Tiara Patterson scored 14 points, James Robinson added 12, and Tomorrow Lofton chipped in 11 to lead the Knights.
