DRT Group dominant in Championship victory
DRT GROUP 61 FUNKY TOWN 47
The intensity was there from the start, and DRT Group never loosened up their firm grip on the inaugural VAIL Championship game, ultimately cruising to a 61-47 victory over Funky Town. DRT jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first eight minutes of the game and, from that point on, the margin remained about the same until the final buzzer. Playoff MVP Damon Thompson led all scorers with 22 points, including an 8-of-9 performance from the foul line. Manny Harris pitched in 12 points, and Kyron Copeland added nine.
The unquestionable key to the victory, though, was on the defensive end. The aggressive defense had been a staple all year for DRT, except for one night - the regular season finale, where they gave up a second-half lead to this same Funky Town team in a 71-62 loss. That night was no doubt in the back of DRT's mind as they entered the Championship with payback on the brain. Justin Holmes led Funky Town with 16 points. The story, however, was the pressure applied by Thompson, Harris, and Bullet Jenkins on the perimeter players of Funky Town. In the first matchup, Funky Town's Rob Rice, Daryl Kimball, and Dwayne Holmes chewed up the DRT zone for a combined 60 points. DRT switched to straight man-to-man in the title game, and it proved to be the difference. The Funky Town trio was limited to just 28 combined points on Wednesday - Rice (9), Kimball (10), and Holmes (9). They were, however, able to hang around and cut the game to eight points with eight minutes to play, but DRT never let them get any closer as they claimed the VAIL Summer League '09 Championship.
DRT Group survives Maples, Green Light run
DRT GROUP 69 GREEN LIGHT 65
|In a game of runs, the team who started the year looking like the team to beat, finished Tuesday's semifinal with the same look. DRT Group used a big push early in the second half to create a 15-point cushion, then had to hold on to defeat Green Light 69-65. Damon Thompson led a balanced DRT attack with 18 points, and Manny Harris contributed 16. Kyron Copeland and Larry Allen each chipped in eight. |
A seven point halftime deficit only grew larger as DRT turned up the defensive pressure and stretched the game to a 51-36 lead, which caused a Green Light timeout. The break must have helped, as Green Light came out of the timeout on a 12-0 run and cut the game to three. Andrew Maples was again unstoppable, pouring in a game-high 41 points. His effort wasn't enough though, as DRT responded with a run of their own and pushed the lead back to double digits in the closing minutes. A late Green Light made the game closer, but DRT Group held on with relative ease. Don Herring added 10, while Ryan Martin and Kevin Hollins each had seven apiece in the losing effort.
Kimball and Rice power Funky Town by top-seeded Globetrotters
FUNKY TOWN 72 GLOBETROTTERS 58
Funky Town took quick control of the game from the tip and stayed in control in an impressive wire-to-wire semifinal victory over the Globetrotters, 72-58. Daryl Kimball and Rob Rice combined for 30 first-half points to build an 11-point lead at the break. Kimball finished with a game-high 29 points, and Rob Rice added 23. Drew Medlin also poured in a big 13 points.
ThDrew Breidenbaugh did his best to keep the Globetrotters in the game, hitting five threes and scoring 18 of his team-high 27 points in the second half. Jeff Champigny fueled the offense in the first half, where he scored 12 of his 13. Brandon Malone was a critical missing ingredient for the top seed, as the Globetrotters struggled to get good looks without his ball-handling and his ability to create shots for everyone. Funky Town's defensive pressure, along with patience on the offensive end and another solid shooting night, was ultimately too much for the Globetrotters to handle.
